The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of joint control over the Japanese producer of LCD panels Sharp Display Products Corporation (SDP) by Sharp Corporation of Japan and Hon Hai of Taiwan.

− (PT) Needle-stick injuries and other injuries caused by sharp medical instruments represent one of the most common and serious risks for health workers throughout Europe; considering that hospital staff and health professionals often risk infections caused by injuries as a result of the use of needles or other sharp instruments, as referred to in the adopted resolution.
- (PT) Les blessures par piqûre d’aiguille et les autres blessures par instruments médicaux tranchants représentent l’un des risques les plus courants et les plus graves pour le personnel de santé dans toute l’Europe, et le personnel hospitalier et les professionnels de santé risquent souvent d’être victimes d’infections causées par des blessures provoquées par l’utilisation de seringues ou d’instruments tranchants, comme le dit la résolution adoptée.

21. Calls on the Commission to ensure that Member States implement the specific preventive measures necessary to protect healthcare workers from injuries caused by needles and other medical sharps in view of the risk of infection from potentially fatal bloodborne pathogens (group 3 biological agents); notes that these should include the appropriate application of training, safe working practices and medical technology incorporating sharps protection mechanisms, and that the applicable guidance provided by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (FACTS 29, ISSN 1681-2123) should be employed to determine the minimum standard of protection; considers, nevertheless, that Directive 2000/54/EC also requires further revision to specifically address the risk arising from work with needles and other medical sharps;
21. appelle la Commission à garantir que les États membres mettent en œuvre les mesures préventives spécifiques nécessaires pour protéger le personnel soignant des blessures causées par des aiguilles et autres instruments médicaux tranchants au vu du risque d'infection dû aux agents pathogènes à diffusion hématogène potentiellement fatals (agents biologiques du groupe 3); note que ces mesures devraient inclure une application correcte de la formation, des pratiques de travail sûres et une technologie médicale incluant des mécanismes de protection contre les objets tranchants, et que le guide applicable fourni par l'Agence européenne pour la sécurité et la santé au travail (FACTS 29, ISSN 1681-2123) devrait être utilisé pour déterminer la norme minimale de protection; considère cependant que la directive 2000/54/CE nécessite également un réexamen pour faire face spécifiquement au risque causé par le travail impliquant la manipulation d'aiguilles et d'autres instruments médicaux tranchants;
