Building on a collaborative process with international partners in 2018, the European Union and Germany will organise the first meeting in 2019. €1.5 million to analyse ecosystems and economic activity on the mid-Atlantic Ridge and the Rio Grande Rise, in order to support the definition of a coherent set of Areas of Particular Environmental Interest. Its intention to support the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean in establishing a Fishing Restricted Area (FRA) of at least 2,700 km² to protect demersal stocks in the habitat recognised as essential nursery and spawning ground for a number of marine species outside territorial waters of Italy and Croatia of the Jabuka/Pomo Pit area of the Adriatic Sea.

DFO's mandate in the Fisheries Act contains provisions for the conservation and protection of fish habitat and sustaining freshwater and marine fisheries resources, including the habitat of Atlantic salmon.

Considers that the programme aimed at enhancing the protection of species and habitats in European waters (Action 2) should not be awaited until 2005 and that European action should contribute to the establishment of the network of marine protected areas called for by WSSD; other appropriate measures worthy of recognition would include the commitments to the establishment of a representative network of well-managed marine protected areas in the North Sea by 2010 (Bergen Declaration) and the North East Atlantic Ocean (including on the high seas) and Baltic Sea in the context of the OSPAR Convention and the Helsinki Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea Area (HELCOM) (forthcoming Joint OSPAR/HELCOM Ministerial Declaration);
20. considère que le programme visant à renforcer la protection des espèces et des habitats des eaux européennes (action 2) ne devrait pas se faire attendre jusqu'en 2005 et qu'une action européenne devrait contribuer à la création du réseau de zones maritimes protégées préconisé par le SMDD; note, parmi les mesures appropriées méritant un accueil favorable, les engagements en faveur de l'établissement d'un réseau représentatif de zones maritimes protégées bien gérées dans la mer du Nord d'ici à 2010 (déclaration de Bergen), dans la partie nord-est de l'océan Atlantique (y compris en haute mer) et dans la mer Baltique dans le cadre de la convention OSPAR et de la convention de Helsinki sur la protection du milieu marin de la mer Baltique (HELCOM) (future déclaration ministérielle commune OSPAR/HELCOM);

That is true of the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific coast and the Arctic. Whether it be improving the safety of Atlantic shipping, restoring fish habitat in a Pacific estuary or protecting the fragile Arctic environment from marine pollution, all these require leadership by the Government of Canada.
