I have played an educational and advocacy role in eating disorders on a national and international level as a member of the steering committee of the Ontario Community Outreach Program for Eating Disorders, the past president of an international organization, the Academy for Eating Disorders, and now as the current president of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.

Next month, in Toronto, Canada is hosting an International Congress on Physical Activity and Physical Health, and later this year the World Health Organization will release their first global physical activity guidelines.

Canada will implement these strategies with partners at the national, regional and international level, as well as take an active role in international reproductive health networks, particularly those relevant to child and adolescent health.

It will relate more specifically to those hospital services where modernisation will have a positive impact on the reduction of infantile and perinatal mortality, the improvement of adolescent health-care and the treatment of traumatic pathology and internal medicine.

Several key speakers will be speaking on the topic of Adolescents' Reproductive Health and Children's Nutrition, including our colleague Senator Landon Pearson, Dr. David Alnwick, Chief of Health for UNICEF, and Dr. Roger Tonkin, President of the International Association of Adolescent Health.

At the international congress last July in Durban, on African territory, researchers, health professionals, non-governmental organisation campaigners and political leaders, were all unanimous in emphasising the urgency of the situation.
