The European Union has a long-standing legislation protecting its waters, whose most significant achievement is, perhaps, the 2000 Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) (WFD), establishing the objective of protection of all waters (rivers, lakes, ground-waters and coastal waters) and providing for the coordination of river basins, across administrative and political boundaries, to achieve this objective.
