Following the notification by the Portuguese government of its intention to settle an alleged accumulated debt of Esc. 35 billion owed to Transportes Aéreos Portugueses SA (TAP), resulting from the air traffic to the Atlantic Islands (Azores and Madeira), the European Commission has decided today: a) not to raise any objection to the compensation of TAP's deficit of Esc. 35,140,964,000 on the grounds that the aid benefits from the exemption of Article 92 (3) of the Treaty; b) to open the procedure under Article 93 (2) in order to clarify certain technical aspects concerning the future method of compensation of TAP's deficit related to the autonomous regions.
A la suite de la notification, par le gouvernement portugais, de son intention de venir en aide à la compagnie aérienne TAP, confrontée àune dette cumulée de 35 milliards d'escudos, (résultant de la desserte des Açores et de Madère), la Commission européenne a décidé ce jour : a) de ne formuler aucune objection à l'encontre de cette aide, destinée à effacer le déficit de TAP d'un montant de 35 140 964 000 escudos, au motif qu'elle entre dans le cadre de l'exemption accordée par l'article 92 paragraphe 3 du Traité; b) d'entamer la procédure prévue par l'article 93 paragraphe 2 en vue d'éclaircir un certain nombre d'aspects techniques concernant la future méthode de compensation du déficit encouru par TAP sur les régions autonomes.
