En matière de RD, les constructeurs se contentent donc généralement d' « adapter » aux utilitaires les innovations préalablement développées pour les voitures, ce qui limite les risques d'échec technologique mais conduit à un résultat sous-optimal, dans la mesure où les technologies adaptées ne répondent pas parfaitement aux contraintes de fonctionnement des utilitaires : puissance insuffisante pour assurer la propulsion de véhicules plus lourds et moins aérodynamiques, qui doivent par ailleurs transporter des charges importantes sur longue distance (autoroute).
