I voted for this resolution as it identifies the next stages which will enable the European Union to continue along this path, strengthens the positive interaction between trade and climate protection and the tools ensuring consistency between trade and climate, and encourages fair international trade prices, thereby avoiding carbon leakage.

However, fair trade seemed a rather bold idea: it meant purchasing the products of developing countries directly from producers at prices higher than those established by the market, selling them to consumers who were informed and prepared to pay a higher price for the sake of solidarity, within a general trade context dominated by large-scale transactions and large industrial groups and complicated by the web of international trade rules.
