If we would have written the history of the Aboriginal peoples in the 1950s, at a time when the residential schools were still operating and the policy of the Indian department was still " to civilize the Indians," then we would not have the approach that we will have five years from now when the reconciliation commission will produce its report and when we will be in a better position to understand what happened to the Aboriginal peoples in Canada.
