E. whereas, in spite of constant and repeated appeals from the international community, the Patriarch of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam, Thich Huyen Quang (87 years old), and his deputy, Thich Quang Do (79 years old), winner of the 2006 Rafto Prize for human rights work, have been imprisoned without trial in their monastery since 1982 for the sole reason of being ardent supporters of religious freedom, human rights and democracy; whereas members of the provincial committees set up by the Church in 20 poorer provinces for the purpose of assisting the most deprived are subjected to harassment, interrogation, intimidation and ongoing threats, simply because of their connections with the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam,

Mr. Ted McWhinney (Vancouver Quadra): Mr. Speaker, we welcome the joint declaration by the religious leaders of different faiths, Serbian Orthodox Church Patriarch, Pavle, Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch, Alexei, and the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Zagreb, Croatia, Cardinal Kuharic, calling for an immediate peace in Bosnia-Hercegovina (1415 ) This ecumenical initiative could fill the tragic vacuum in political leadership and at last end the bloodshed in the region.

Je suis personnellement reconnaissant - comme l'est la Commission - à Sa Sainteté le Patriarche Pavle et à toute l'Église orthodoxe, dont il est le chef, pour l'autorité morale et l'inspiration civique dont ils ont su faire preuve pendant ces années difficiles, pour le témoignage spirituel qu'ils ont apporté, pour avoir condamné sans relâche la tyrannie et exigé le retour à la liberté.
I am personally grateful as is my Commission to His Holiness Patriarch Pavle, and to the whole of the Orthodox Church of which he is the leader, for the moral and civic leadership they have played during these difficult years; for the spiritual witness they have given; for having constantly condemned tyranny and demanded a return to freedom.
