Notre rôle d'ombudsman s'appuie en partie sur les privilèges dont jouissent les députés. Ces privilèges sont assez clairement définis et assez précis; il en est fait mention directement ou indirectement dans notre Constitution, dans la Loi sur le Parlement du Canada et dans la common law dont nous avons hérité lors de la création de notre Parlement il y a 128 ans.
Our ombudsman role is carried out in part based on the privileges of members of Parliament which are fairly well articulated, constrained and referred to directly and indirectly in the Constitution, in the Parliament of Canada Act and in the common law handed down to us when Parliament was created 128 years ago (1340) I do not have to go over them but I will point out that in every session of Parliament it is important for MPs to resubmit our request to the Sovereign for confirmation of our privileges in the House of Commons.

In our role as the federal ombudsman, we liaise with victims-serving agencies and victims' advocates and victims and other stakeholders from across the country and consult with them on getting their input in terms of what they see as the priorities and issues facing victims of crime.

This situation sparked a whole reflection in our office of how we could evolve our ombudsman's role in such a way to be more proactive, and how we could go beyond the complaint process to help institutions change their behaviour.
