Au nom de mes collègues du Groupe d'amitié interparlementaire Canada-Irlande, je remercie l'ambassadeur et Mme Dempsey de leur grande amitié et de leur soutien à notre groupe, ici à Ottawa.
On behalf of my colleagues in the Canada-Ireland Interparliamentary Friendship Group, may I thank Ambassador and Mrs. Dempsey for their great friendship to and support of our group here in Ottawa.

In his meetings with our Minister of Foreign Affairs, with the members of our friendship group and with the Canadian Lebanese community, Mr. Bouez will stress the importance of strengthening co-operation between our two countries, the importance of finding a longstanding and fair solution to the situation in the middle east and the importance of implementing UN resolution 425 on Israel's occupation of southern Lebanon.

Also, last year Taiwan's parliament created a sister group to our very active Canada-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, which I have the honour to lead. Our group last year paved the way to revive the Terry Fox Run in Taiwan.

As for the other Member who spoke of ‘Mr Berlusconi’s friends’, I can assure him on behalf of the Union for Europe of the Nations Group that our amendments are on behalf of the whole group; the whole group is united; none of us has private friendships or enmities; but we claim the right as Members of this Parliament to carry out our mandate to the full, doing what the Rules of Procedure allow and not just standing by listening to the constant provocations made even in committee.

I would simply like to assure you that you can count on the active support of our European Parliament, on the active support of our political groups, on the active support of the intergroup which, as you know, has been created precisely to further strengthen our friendship with the Tibetan people. You can count on our support, you can count on our indestructible loyalty so that, in the spirit of your proposals, Tibet can regain its freedom.

Le Canada et Taïwan n'entretiennent encore que des relations de personne à personne par l'entremise de groupes tels que notre Groupe d'amitié Canada-Taïwan, mais puisque Taiwan croit également dans la démocratie, les droits de la personne et la règle de droit, la poursuite du dialogue entre nous est très importante.
Canada and Taiwan still only have people-to- people relations through groups such as our Canada-Taiwan Friendship Group, but since Taiwan also believes in democracy, human rights and the rule of law, continuing dialogue between us is very important.
