Un certain nombre d'organisations internationales exercent une compétence directe sur des questions liées à la biotechnologie: la prévention des risques biotechnologiques relève du protocole de Carthagène; la biodiversité, de la convention sur la diversité biologique (CBD); l'agriculture, de l'Organisation pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture (FAO); les droits de propriété intellectuelle et les transferts de technologie, de l'Organisation mondiale de la propriété intellectuelle (OMPI) et de l'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC); le commerce, de l'OMC; l'analyse des risques liés aux denrées alimentaires dérivées de la biotechnologie moderne, du Codex Alimentarius sous l'égide de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) et de la FAO; la protection des végétaux, de la Convention internationale pour la protection des végétaux (CIPV); enfin, l'élaboration des documents de consensus relève de l'Organisation de coopération et de développement économiques (OCDE).
A number of international organisations have direct competence in dealing with issues relating to biotechnology - biosafety is addressed by the Cartagena Protocol, biodiversity by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), agriculture by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), intellectual property rights and technology transfer by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and World Trade Organisation (WTO), trade by the WTO, risk analysis of foods derived from modern biotechnology in Codex Alimentarius under the World Health Organisation (WHO)/FAO, plant protection under the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), and the development of consensus documents by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Bearing in mind that the majority of the crew on many non-Community flagged vessels calling at European ports are Filipino, as well as the harsh and inhuman working conditions in which many of these seafarers live, calls on Member States not to allow these vessels to be received in European ports when the working conditions on board contravene the labour rights and principles enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union; urges, likewise, non-Community flagged vessels to guarantee their crews’ working conditions in accordance with international legislation and the rules laid down by the ILO and the IMO.

D. whereas the Treaty of Lisbon, by introducing the Union’s legal personality, enhances the EU’s capacity to join various international organisations, entrusts it with a wider range of competences in its external action, provides, notably by the creation of the post of a Vice-President of the Commission/High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (VP/HR) and the European External Action Service (EEAS), the Union with an opportunity for a clearer and stronger single voice in the world, as well as encouraging all types of mutually beneficial cooperation with relevant international and regional organisations and groups of states, and whereas it enables the Union to organise itself in such a way as to be able to become an effective global player,

– (EL) Madam President, the initiative by Mrs Gomes to draft a report on women in international politics is praiseworthy because, as the Commissioner also pertinently observed, comparisons of the numbers and figures she presents – from Nobel prizewinners to the number of women who have reached key positions in international politics in the Member States or in international organisations – illustrate the lack of female participation.
