C. whereas on 17 December 2013 the Commission duly published its report regarding the mandatory indication of the country of origin or place of provenance for meat used as an ingredient, and an accompanying staff working document entitled ‘Origin labelling for meat used as an ingredient: consumers’ attitude, feasibility of possible scenarios and impacts’;

Improved legibility of information (minimum font size for mandatory information); Clearer and harmonised presentation of allergens (e.g. soy, nuts, gluten, lactose) for prepacked foods (emphasis by font, style or background colour) in the list of ingredients; Mandatory allergen information for non-prepacked food, including in restaurants and cafes; Requirement of certain nutrition information for majority of prepacked processed foods; Mandatory origin information for fresh meat from pigs, sheep, goats and poultry; Same labelling requirements for online, distance-selling or buying in a shop; List of engineered nanomaterials in the ingredients. Specific information on the vegetable origin of refined oils and fats; Strengthened rules to prevent misleading practices; Indication of substitute ingredient for 'Imitation' foods; Clear indication of "formed meat" or "formed fish"; and Clear indication of defrosted products.

13. Welcomes the provisions in the new Food Information to Consumers Law which provides for mandatory place of origin labelling for beef, pigmeat, poultrymeat and sheepmeat; calls on the Commission to put forward, as soon as possible, legislative proposals to improve traceability in the food chain by introducing mandatory labelling for those meat products specifying place of birth, place of rearing and place of slaughter where those places are different; calls, in addition, for legislative proposals on mandatory place of origin labelling for milk and milk products, unprocessed foods, meat used as an ingredient, single-ingredient products, and ingredients representing more than 50% of a food product;
