The United Kingdom is taking part in this [INSTRUMENT], in accordance with Article 5(1) of Protocol No 19 on the Schengen acquis integrated into the framework of the European Union, annexed to the Treaty on European Union and to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, and Article 8(2) of Council Decision 2000/365/EC of 29 May 2000 concerning the request of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to take part in some of the provisions of the Schengen acquis*.

We know that the Commission’s delegation on the ground is doing a remarkable job in difficult conditions. If, however, the EU is to be an active member of the quartet in the manner suggested by the speeches, the EU would do well to accord its budgetary lines as it intends.

Le retour de la paix en Afghanistan et la reconstruction qui s'ensuivra laissent à penser qu'il faut dès aujourd'hui déterminer le rôle de l'Union en tant que médiatrice et rédactrice de propositions, afin que l'avenir de l'Afghanistan soit marqué non seulement par la reprise économique et par un système démocratique, mais aussi par la reconquête par les femmes d'un rôle dans la politique et la vie sociale.
With a view to achieving peace in Afghanistan and the subsequent reconstruction of the country, the Union’s role both as mediator and a proactive force must be defined now so that Afghanistan’s future is characterised not just by economic recovery and the establishment of a democratic political system, but also by the reestablishment of a role for women in politics and social life.
