The Union began with six Member States. There are now 15. Very soon we could be 25, then 27, 28 and perhaps many more in the future.

Ce pays ne peut se redresser seul après une telle histoire, et il a été souligné pertinemment qu’il constitue un foyer de conflit potentiel extrêmement dangereux. D’un côté, la Russie est directement impliquée à travers la Transnistrie, à travers la République dite du Dniestr, qui constitue pour ainsi dire le poste avancé des cercles nationalistes et militaires de Russie en Europe, et de l’autre côté la Moldavie est empreinte de relations historiques et culturelles avec la Roumanie. Si nous voulons éviter que la Moldavie ne devienne une poudrière dangereuse entre un pays candidat à l’adhésion d’une part et le voisin le plus puissant de l’Union européenne de l’autre, nous devons mettre tout en œuvre pour stabiliser le pays, ou en d’autres termes, intervenir en faveur des droits de l’homme, pour les droits des chrétiens-démocrates opprimés et de nos autres confrères au parlement moldave, contre les velléités néocolonialistes de réunifier ce pays par la langue et la falsification de l’histoire, pour la démocratie et pour l’État de droit.
On one side, Russia is directly involved via Transdniestria or the so-called Dniester Republic which, from Russia's point of view, is a sort of advance guard of nationalistic and militaristic circles in Europe while, on the other side, it has cultural and historic links with Romania, and it will become a dangerous bone of contention between an EU candidate country on one side and the European Union's most powerful neighbour on the other, unless we do everything we can to stabilise this country, by which I mean we must stand up for human rights, for the rights of our Christian democrat and other counterparts in the Moldavian Parliament who are under attack, we must stand up against neo-colonialist efforts to bring this country under control through language and by rewriting history and we must stand up for democracy and the rule of law.

Les pays de l’Union représentent déjà la première puissance économique mondiale, mais sur le chemin de sa constitution en entité politique universelle, l’Union ne doit pas exprimer son pouvoir économique à travers la domination du marché ultralibéral, sectaire et aveugle, ni copier l’hégémonie militariste des États-Unis, tentations auxquelles certains Premiers ministres européens succombent, mais elle doit défendre les valeurs et les conquêtes sociales et démocratiques qui constituent la meilleure part de notre histoire, en étant présente dans le monde comme facteur de paix et de progrès, dans une action qui doit être bien plus ambitieuse que celle exposée aujourd'hui par la Commission, comme le commissaire Solbes le sait.
The countries of the Union already form the greatest economic power in the world, but on its path to becoming a universal political body, the Union must not express its economic power by dominating the sectarian and blind ultraliberal market or by simply imitating the military hegemony of the United States, and these are temptations into which some European Prime Ministers are falling. What we should be doing instead is defending the values and the social and democratic achievements that form the best part of our history, and we should maintain a presence in the world as a factor for peace and for progress, in an action which, as Commissioner Solbes knows, must be a great deal more ambitious than the action presented today by the Commission.
