Having regard to Regulation (EU) No 1024/2012 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 October 2012 on administrative cooperation through the Internal Market Information System and repealing Commission Decision 2008/49/EC (‘the IMI Regulation’) , and in particular Article 4(1) thereof,

L'IMI aide, notamment, les autorités compétentes à déterminer quel est leur homologue dans un autre État membre, à gérer les échanges d'informations – y compris les données à caractère personnel – sur la base de procédures simples et harmonisées, et à surmonter les barrières linguistiques grâce à des procédures de traitement prédéfinies et prétraduites.
In particular, IMI helps competent authorities to identify their counterpart in another Member State, to manage the exchange of information, including personal data, on the basis of simple and unified procedures and to overcome language barriers on the basis of pre-defined and pre-translated workflows.

Conformément au principe de la prise en compte du respect de la vie privée dès la conception, l'IMI a été mis au point en gardant à l'esprit les exigences de la législation relative à la protection des données et a été, dès ses débuts, respectueux de la protection des données, grâce, notamment, aux restrictions imposées pour l'accès aux données à caractère personnel échangées dans l'IMI.
Following the privacy-by-design principle, IMI has been developed with the requirements of data protection legislation in mind and has been data protection-friendly from its inception, in particular because of the restrictions imposed on access to personal data exchanged in IMI.

While IMI includes an internet-based interface for its users, in certain cases and at the request of the Member State concerned, it may be appropriate to consider technical solutions for the direct transfer of data from national systems to IMI, where such national systems have already been developed, notably for notification procedures.

This Regulation will create the possibility to launch IMI pilot projects to test the use of IMI for administrative cooperation, including the exchange of personal data, in any Single Market area provided that there is a legal basis for the exchange of these data.
