M. Santer et M. Blair ont lancé le nouveau service "EUROPE DIRECT" lors d'une cérémonie spéciale organisée à l'occasion du Conseil européen de Cardiff. Les deux présidents ont inauguré un nouvel outil Internet en trois dimensions, "L'Europe virtuelle", montrant ainsi comment s'informer sur les droits et possibilités dans l'Union européenne.
"Today is the first stage of the new Programme", Mr Santer said". The new service concentrates primarily on citizens, while in 1999 it will be extended to businesses. Early in the New Year the Europe Direct Service will be strengthened by a new European call centre which will be geared up to respond to questions on all EU policies.
