Le 4 février 2011, le nom de M. Mehdi Ben Ali, neveu de l’ancien président tunisien Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, a été inscrit sur la liste des personnes visées par ce gel de fonds , au motif qu’il faisait l’objet d’une enquête judiciaire des autorités tunisiennes pour acquisition de biens immobiliers et mobiliers, ouverture de comptes bancaires et détention d’avoirs financiers dans plusieurs pays dans le cadre d’opérations de blanchiment d’argent.
On 4 February 2011, the name of Mr Mehdi Ben Ali, nephew of the former Tunisian President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, was entered on the list of persons whose funds were to be frozen , on the ground that he was subject to judicial investigation by the Tunisian authorities in respect of the acquisition of movable and immovable property, the opening of bank accounts and the holding of financial assets in several countries as part of money-laundering operations.

The decision [OJ L 31, 5.2.2011, p. 40] and the regulation [OJ L 31, 5.2.2011, p. 1], which target a list of 48 persons, including former president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and his wife, were published on 5 February 2011 in the EU Official Journal.

G. whereas since January 2011 the funds and assets of 48 people responsible for the misappropriation of Tunisian state funds, and since March 2011 the funds and assets of 19 people responsible for the misappropriation of Egyptian state funds, including the former Tunisian and Egyptian Presidents, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and Hosni Mubarak, have been frozen in the EU;

Le Conseil a prorogé de douze mois, jusqu'au 31 janvier 2014, les sanctions infligées aux personnes responsables du détournement de fonds publics tunisiens, y compris l'ancien président tunisien, M. Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
The Council extended the sanctions against persons responsible for the misappropriation of Tunisian state funds, including former Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, by 12 months, i.e. until 31 January 2014.
