The Italian delegation, supported by the French, Austrian, German, Luxembourg and Portuguese delegations, drew the attention of the Council and of the Commission to the possible problems caused by the co-existence of conventional, organic and biotechnological forms of farming (see doc 15601/02).

Following the Councils discussions, the Commission stated that the memorandum submitted by the Austrian delegation - like the memorandum submitted by Italy on the same topic in January 1995 and any other similar initiative by Member States (France has also announced that it will shortly be submitting a memorandum on mountain and hill farming) - would be looked at very carefully by it in preparing the European Conference on Rural Development which it would be organizing in Cork in Ireland, in cooperation with the Presidency, in November 1996.
