When I was asked to launch an appeal on behalf of Safiya Husseini for a similar offence I was informed that at least four women were awaiting the same sentence – Amina Lawal was one of them – and that young boys from 12 to 16 years of age were awaiting amputation of their hands for theft. Whilst we respect national sovereignty there is a better way forward for Nigeria and its people.

C'est pourquoi, en plus de manifester notre rejet absolu des condamnations à mort édictées, en plus de demander des mesures de grâce en faveur d'Amina Lawal, d'Ahmadu Ibrahin et de Fatima Usman, nous devons et nous voulons exiger des gouvernements de ces pays qu'ils harmonisent leur législation par rapport aux normes et engagements internationaux en matière de droits de l'homme ; ceci afin d'empêcher que l'application de la sharia ne viole les droits fondamentaux.
Therefore, as well as our absolute rejection of the death sentences which have been handed down, and as well as asking for mercy for Amina Lawal, Ahmadu Ibrahin and Fatima Usman, we must and want to demand that the governments of these countries bring their legislation into line with the international standards and commitments in the field of human rights, in order to prevent an application of the sharia which violates human rights.
