EURid, consortium regroupant des organisations belge, italienne et suédoise, a été choisi comme registre du DPN «.eu» en mai 2003 à l’issue d’une procédure d’appel à manifestations d’intérêt; Le règlement (CE) n° 874/2004 de la Commission 28 avril 2004, qui met en œuvre le règlement (CE) n° 733/2002 et établit les règles de politique d'intérêt général concernant des questions telles que les enregistrements abusifs ou spéculatifs, les problèmes liés aux droits de propriété intellectuelle et droits apparentés, la question des langues et des concepts géographiques, ou encore la question du règlement extrajudiciaire des litiges; Le 21 mars 2005, l’ICANN, qui gère le système des noms de domaine à l’échelle mondiale, a officiellement reconnu EURid comme l’organisme désigné par l’Union européenne pour gérer le DPN «.eu» pour les cinq prochaines années.
EURid, a consortium of Belgian, Italian and Swedish organisations, was chosen to be the .eu Registry in May 2003, following a call for expressions of interest. EC Regulation 874/2004 (28 April 2004), adopted by the Commission to implement EC Regulation 733/2002, lays down public policy rules on issues like speculative and abusive registrations of domain names, intellectual property and other rights, issues of language and geographical concepts, and the extra-judicial settlement of conflicts. On 21 March 2005 the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which manages the worldwide domain name system, formally recognised EURid as the body appointed by the European Union the European Union to run the .eu TLD for the next five years.

Pour que tout marche bien dans le nouveau DPN comme dans les autres DPN, l’ICANN et la Commission ont convenu de créer le DPN «.eu » avant que ne soient adoptées les règles de l’UE relatives à ce domaine de premier niveau.
To ensure smooth progress on the new street and on all the other streets, ICANN and the Commission agreed on the creation of the .eu TLD prior to the adoption of the EU rules on .eu.
