Le 24 janvier 2006, le Conseil a décidé qu’il existait un déficit excessif au Royaume-Uni et a recommandé au gouvernement d’entreprendre une action avant le 24 juillet afin de « mettre un terme à la situation actuelle de déficit excessif le plus rapidement possible, et au plus tard pour l’exercice budgétaire 2006/07 » et de « ramener le déficit des finances publiques en dessous de 3 % du PIB d’une manière crédible et durable en assurant pour ce faire une amélioration du solde structurel d’au moins 0,5 point de pourcentage du PIB au cours des exercices budgétaires 2005/06 et 2006/07 ».
On 24 January 2006 the Council decided that an excessive deficit existed in the United Kingdom and recommended that the Government take action by 24 July to "put an end to its excessive deficit situation as soon as possible and by 2006/07 at the latest" and to "bring the general government deficit to below 3% of GDP in a credible and sustainable manner, and to this end to ensure an improvement of the structural balance of at least 0.5% of GDP between the 2005/06 and the 2006/07 financial years".
