Les sujets s'imposent à eux-mêmes un poids faible. Il existe habituellement une dénutrition de gravité variable s'accompagnant de modifications endocriniennes et métaboliques secondaires et de perturbations des fonctions physiologiques. Les symptômes comprennent une restriction des choix alimentaires, une pratique excessive d'exercices physiques, des vomissements provoqués et l'utilisation de laxatifs, de coupe-faim et de diurétiques.
Definition: A disorder characterized by deliberate weight loss, induced and sustained by the patient. It occurs most commonly in adolescent girls and young women, but adolescent boys and young men may also be affected, as may children approaching puberty and older women up to the menopause. The disorder is associated with a specific psychopathology whereby a dread of fatness and flabbiness of body contour persists as an intrusive overvalued idea, and the patients impose a low weight threshold on themselves. There is usually undernutrition of varying severity with secondary endocrine and metabolic changes and disturbances of bodily function. The symptoms include restricted dietary choice, excessive exercise, induced vomiting and purgation, and use of appetite suppressants and diuretics.

Il semblerait qu'un tel choix n'est pas, dans l'esprit des rédacteurs de la Convention, un choix de loi au sens de l'article 3 qui ne viserait que le choix d'une loi étatique : le contrat qui comporterait un tel choix serait régi par la loi applicable à défaut de choix (article 4) et ce serait à cette loi qu'il appartiendrait de définir la place qu'elle consent à accorder aux règles non étatiques choisies par les parties.
In the minds of the authors of the Convention, such a choice does not constitute a choice of law within the meaning of Article 3, which can only be choice of a body of state law: a contract containing such a choice would be governed by the law applicable in the absence of a choice (Article 4), and it would fall to this law to determine the role to be played by the non-state rules chosen by the parties.

For this choice being valid, it would be for the business to prove that the consumer made an informed choice and that he had advance information on all the rights and obligations conferred on him by that law (right of withdrawal, exchange of product, duration and terms of the guarantee, etc If the business failed to do so, the court would apply either the consumer's law or the mandatory provisions of that law. Such a solution, being justified by the existence of a Community minimum standard of consumer protection, would obviously be applicable only if the business was domiciled in a Member State. 4. Where all other elements relevant to the situation at the time of the choice are located in one or more Member States, the parties' choice of applicable law other than that of a Member State shall not prejudice the application of provisions of Community law, where appropriate as implemented in the Member State of the forum, which cannot be derogated from by agreement.
