« Dans cette situation, et bien que l'Europe soit prête à faire un effort de solidarité supérieur aux autres continents, confirmant ainsi son rôle de leader dans la lutte contre le dopage, le respect de l'autorité budgétaire et mon soucis des intérêts communautaires me conduisent à ne pas demander à la Commission de faire de proposition de financement » a déclaré Viviane Reding, ajoutant que « ceci ne remet nullement en cause la volonté de la Commission d'engager une lutte résolue contre le dopage dans le sport ni de participer aux travaux de l'AMA.
Mrs Reding stated that given this situation, and although Europe is willing to show greater solidarity than the other continents and thus underpin its role as leader in the fight against doping, respect for the budgetary authority and her concern for Community interests prompt her not to ask the Commission to put forward a funding proposal. She stressed that this in no way calls into question the Commission's resolve to make a determined effort to stem doping in sport and to take part in the work of the WADA.
