I'd like to take this opportunity to inform the committee that as part of the Summit of the Americas scheduled from June 3 to June 5, 2000, a conference on accounting standards and guidelines has been organized.

It was agreed, That Members of the Committee should submit to the Clerk a proposed list of individuals or organisations to appear during the hearings on the Summit of the Americas and the FTAA.

C'est aussi pourquoi les participants ont demandé à Puerto Rico que chaque assemblée parlementaire de l'hémisphère tienne des consultations publiques sur les impacts de la création d'une zone de libre-échange, comme votre comité est en train de le faire, et comme l'a fait l'Assemblée nationale du Québec et le Congrès national du Brésil, que les chefs d'État et de gouvernement informent officiellement toutes les assemblées parlementaires de l'hémisphère, au moins six mois avant le premier Sommet des Amériques prévu pour avril 2001, de l'état d'avancement des négociations sur la zone de libre-échange, ce qui n'a pas été fait, et que les représentants de la COPA soient autorisés à participer au Sommet des Amériques dans le but de présenter aux autorités exécutives des Amériques les intérêts et les aspirations des populations de l'hémisphère au sujet des effets du processus d'intégration.
That is why, in Puerto Rico, the participants demanded that each parliamentary assembly of the hemisphere hold public consultations on the impacts of the creation of the free trade area, as this committee is presently doing, and as has been done by the National Assembly of Quebec and the National Congress of Brazil; that the heads of state and governments officially inform each parliamentary assembly of the hemisphere, six months before the first Summit of the Americas in April 2001 at the latest, of the state of advancement of negotiations on the free trade area—this has not been done; and that representatives of COPA be allowed to take part in the Summit of the Americas in order to present to the executive authorities of the Americas the interests and aspirations of the populations of the hemisphere regarding the impacts of the integration process.

Conformément au paragraphe 108(2) du Règlement, le comité a étudié le dossier du troisième Sommet des Amériques qui s'est tenu à Québec en avril 2001 et il est heureux de présenter ce rapport qui devrait contribuer à améliorer la qualité des sommets à venir et la compréhension de cet important processus.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) the committee considered the issue of the third summit of the Americas held in Quebec City in April 2001 and is pleased to table this report, which we believe will make a contribution to improving future summits and understanding this important process.

Le Sommet des Amériques se trouve affaibli par l'exclusion d'un pays aussi important que Cuba pour la région, et on s'aventure en terrain glissant quand on essaie d'expliquer pourquoi, au regard des droits de la personne, il est justifié d'exclure Cuba parce qu'elle est communiste alors qu'on peut faire bon accueil à la Chine, qui est également communiste.
It weakens the Summit of the Americas to exclude a country as important to the region as Cuba, and we really are on thin ice here in terms of any kind of distinction that can be made in terms of human rights and reasons to exclude communist Cuba while embracing communist China.

L. whereas at its meeting of 2 June 2008 the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health rejected the above Commission proposal by 316 votes to nil, with 29 abstentions, thus sending out a clear and forceful message prior to the EU-US Summit in Brdo, Slovenia,

75. invite les partenaires à développer des initiatives solidaires entre eux et à intensifier l'organisation de forums sociaux qui associent le monde de l'entreprise, les travailleurs, aux consommateurs et à la société civile, tant au niveau de l'Union européenne et de l'Amérique latine qu'au niveau national; invite le Comité économique et social européen à intensifier ses activités dans ce domaine et à transmettre son expérience aux partenaires latino américains; se félicite en ce sens des contributions positives apportées par les forums de la société civile se réunissant dans la perspective des sommets;
75. Calls on the partners to pursue joint initiatives and to hold more frequent social forums bringing together the business world, workers, consumers and civil society, on the one hand at the level of the EU and Latin America as such and on the other within the different countries; calls on the European Economic and Social Committee to intensify its activities in this area and to pass on its experience to the Latin American partners; in this connection, welcomes the positive contributions made by the Civil Society Forums meeting alongside the Summits;

9. accueille favorablement le message commun adressé par les partenaires sociaux européens au Sommet social tripartite du 11 décembre et rappelle que le dialogue social est le facteur clé de la modernisation du marché de l'emploi; demande que de meilleures conditions soient créées pour l'information, la consultation et la participation des travailleurs, et, en particulier, que la directive relative au comité d'entreprise européen soit révisée à bref délai;
9. Welcomes the joint message of the European Social Partners to the Tripartite Social Summit on 11 December; points out that social dialogue is a key element of the modernisation of the labour market; calls for better conditions to be created for information, consultation and participation of the workforce and, in particular, for immediate action to be taken to revise the European Works Council Directive;

J'accueille dès lors positivement le deuxième sommet des chefs d'État et de gouvernement d'Amérique latine, des Caraïbes et de l'UE à Madrid le 17 mai.
I therefore welcome the second summit of the heads of state and government of Latin America, the Caribbean and the EU in Madrid on 17 May.
