Before the applicant countries can withstand the full pressure of competition, they need to face a number of major challenges: the adoption and implementation of the EU rules of competition, environmental standards and the social policy acquis. The adoption of the latter plays a very important role as far as economic competition is concerned: this could prevent at least some of the distortions of competition between Member States and applicant countries in the labour and services market caused by differences in social policies.
