The initiative is also complementary to the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade Action Plan of the European Union (EU FLEGT) and the provisions of Regulation (EU) No 995/2010 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 October 2010 laying down the obligations of operators who place timber and timber products on the market , which require traders of timber products to exercise due diligence in order to prevent illegal wood from entering into the Union market.
Het initiatief vult ook het actieplan van de Europese Unie inzake „Wetshandhaving, governance en handel in de bosbouw” (EU FLEGT) en de bepalingen van Verordening (EU) nr. 995/2010 van het Europees Parlement en de Raad van 20 oktober 2010 tot vaststelling van de verplichtingen van marktdeelnemers die hout en houtproducten op de markt brengen aan, die vereisen dat handelaren in houtproducten gepaste zorgvuldigheid aan de dag leggen om te voorkomen dat illegaal hout de markt van de Unie binnenkomt.

As you know, at the sitting on 19 December 2007, the committee in question gave its opinion on the legal basis of the motion for a Council resolution. This resolution was taken on behalf of the European Community with regard to the conclusion of the 2006 International Tropical Timber Agreement, tabled by the Commission.
