B. whereas this is acknowledged in the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), which stipulates that the objectives of the Union's energy policy include the functioning of the energy market, security of (energy) supply, energy efficiency, energy saving, new and renewable energy sources, and interconnections, and that the Union's environmental policy must contribute to preserving, protecting and improving the quality of the environment, protecting human health, prudent and rational utilisation of natural resources and the promotion of measures at international level to deal with regional or worldwide environmental problems, and in particular combating climate change;
B. overwegende dat dit wordt erkend in het Verdrag betreffende de werking van de Europese Unie (VWEU), waarin is vastgelegd dat de doelstellingen van het energiebeleid van de Unie onder meer de werking van de energiemarkt, continuïteit van de (energie)voorziening, energie-efficiëntie, energiebesparing, nieuwe en duurzame energiebronnen en de interconnectie van energienetwerken omvatten, en dat het milieubeleid van de Unie moet bijdragen tot het behoud, de bescherming en de verbetering van de kwaliteit van het milieu, de bescherming van de gezondheid van de mens, een behoedzaam en rationeel gebruik van natuurlijke hulpbronnen en de bevordering van internationale maatregelen om het hoofd te bieden aan regionale of mondiale milieuproblemen, en in het bijzonder de bestrijding van de klimaatverandering;

(1) Natural resources, the prudent and rational utilisation of which is provided for in Article 174 of the Treaty, include, apart from renewable energy sources, oil, natural gas and solid fuels, which are essential energy sources but are also the main sources of carbon dioxide emissions.
