Replying to Mr Borrell, Isidoro Gottardo (chair of the EPP group in the CoR) did not hide his indignation at comments made at the plenary session the previous day by the British deputy prime minister and first secretary of state, John Prescott. Addressing the session on behalf of the UK presidency, Mr Prescott had described certain Community policies as "outdated" and "archaic"".
