Mr. Simon de Jong (Regina-Qu'Appelle, NDP) moved: That, in the opinion of this House, the government, on this 60th anniversary of the ``On to Ottawa'' Trek, should offer an unequivocal and official apology for the government of the day having perpetuated the following: (1) having caused, through the use of violence as administered by the combined police forces of the Regina City Police and the RCMP the termination of the trek in Regina, Saskatchewan on July 1, 1935, with attendant loss of life, injury and imprisonment; (2) having contributed to, rather than detracted from the plight of the unemployed by: (a) forcing many unemployed young men into work camps, (b) having prevented all the trekkers from coming to Ottawa to express their democratic right for better conditions in the work camps, (c) abrogating its responsibility of providing the necessary leadership in a time of high unemployment which would have created decent and rewarding full time employment;

Simon de Jong (Regina-Qu'Appelle, NPD) propose: Que, de l'opinion de 1a Chambre, le gouvernement devrait, à l'occasion du 60e anniversaire de la «marche sur Ottawa», s'excuser officiellement et de façon non équivoque des actes commis par le gouvernement de l'époque, lequel est condamnable pour: (1) avoir mis fin à la marche à Regina, en Saskatchewan, le 1er juillet 1935, en faisant appel aux forces combinées de la police municipale de Regina et de la Gendarmerie royale, lesquelles ont recouru à la violence et causé des pertes de vie, fait des blessés et emprisonné des grévistes; (2) avoir approfondi la misère des chômeurs, au lieu de la soulager, a) en forçant beaucoup de jeunes chômeurs à aller dans des camps de travail; b) en empêchant les marcheurs de venir à Ottawa exercer leur droit démocratique de demander une amélioration de leurs conditions de travail dans les camps; c) en abdiquant la responsabilité qu'il avait, en cette époque de chômage généralisé, de prendre les mesures voulues pour créer des emplois décents à plein temps et bien rémunérés;
