Naturally, much of the decline in activity at the Community's shipyards can be attributed to objective factors: - the sharp worldwide decline in seaborne shipping since the late 1970s, including a 25% drop between 1979 and 1984; - the establishment of production plant in the newly industrializing countries; - the emergence of heavy industries close to raw material sources in developing countries; - energy savings and the growing share taken by nuclear energy, at the expense of oil and fossil fuel shipments; - greater self-sufficiency in food crops, which has reduced cereal exports, particularly to certain regions; - the shift away from physical commodities throughout the economy: new, electronically-based technologies obviate the need for a wide range of manufactured goods.
Il est evident que des donnees objectives expliquent en grande partie le declin d'activite des chantiers navals : - transport maritime mondial en nette diminution depuis la fin des annees 1970 avec une diminution de 25 % entre 1979 et 1984, - l'implantation de sites de production industrielle dans des pays nouvellement industrialises, - creation d'industries lourdes dans des pays en developpement a proximite des sources de matieres premieres, - l'economie d'energie et la part croissante de l'energie nucleaire au detriment du trafic petrolier et mineralier, - une certaine autosuffisance pour des produits agricoles qui reduisent les exportations de cereales en particulier vers certaines regions du monde, - une certaine "dematerialisation" de l'economie : la nouvelle donne technologique reposant sur l'electronique rend superflu un certain nombre de produits manufactures.
