Lastly, Commissioner, Madam President, let me add that the hypocrisy surrounding the issue of the Tobin tax added nothing to the intellectual standing of the European Union. For once, the European Union had the opportunity to show that it intended to have an effect on world affairs, to become more than what it actually is, simply one more piece of the jigsaw of liberal globalisation.
Permettez-moi enfin d'ajouter, Monsieur le Commissaire, Madame le Président en exercice du Conseil, que l'hypocrisie autour de l'affaire de la taxe Tobin ne grandit nullement le rang intellectuel de l'Union européenne qui avait là, pour une fois, l'occasion de montrer qu'elle entendait peser sur les affaires du monde, autrement qu'en étant ce qu'elle est finalement, une pièce du puzzle de la mondialisation libérale.
