The Commission wishes to express its surprise that the honourable Member is accusing a Commission official of taking decisions affecting a multinational whose interests he defends, and points out that the decisions on the issues in question were taken by the Commission as a whole or by the Director-General concerned, following consultation with the relevant services. The Commission consequently fails to understand why the Commissioner has been called into question in this regard. The Commission would be interested to know on what grounds the honourable Member makes these allegations.

In the temporary, but wholly understandable, absence of my honourable friend at the beginning of this debate I was tempted to say that this would be like Hamlet without the prince, but I am delighted that he is with us in order to contribute his wisdom and good sense to this extremely important debate which is taking place at the honourable Member's initiative.
