Ports play an important role in the EU economy in terms of jobs, providing an estimated 3 million direct (port and port-related industries) and indirect (logistics/supply chain) jobs in a broad range of sectors among the 22 member countries with coasts.

In accordance with Council Regulation (EC) No 1894/2006 of 18 December 2006 concerning the implementation of the Agreement in the form of an Exchange of Letters between the European Community and Brazil relating to the modification of concessions in the schedules of the Czech Republic, the Republic of Estonia, the Republic of Cyprus, the Republic of Latvia, the Republic of Lithuania, the Republic of Hungary, the Republic of Malta, the Republic of Poland, the Republic of Slovenia and the Slovak Republic in the course of accession to the European Community, amending and supplementing Annex I to Regulation (EEC) No 2658/87 on the tariff and statistical nomenclature and on the Common Customs Tariff (4), the Community has undertaken to import from Brazil a tariff rate quota of 10 124 tonnes of raw cane sugar for refining at a rate of duty of EUR 98 per tonne.
Conformément au règlement (CE) no 1894/2006 du Conseil du 18 décembre 2006 concernant la mise en œuvre de l’accord sous forme d’échange de lettres entre la Communauté européenne et le Brésil concernant la modification de concessions dans les listes d’engagements de la République tchèque, de la République d’Estonie, de la République de Chypre, de la République de Lettonie, de la République de Lituanie, de la République de Hongrie, de la République de Malte, de la République de Pologne, de la République de Slovénie et de la République slovaque, dans le cadre du processus d’adhésion à la Communauté européenne, modifiant et complétant l’annexe I du règlement (CEE) no 2658/87 relatif à la nomenclature tarifaire et statistique et au tarif douanier commun (4), la Communauté s’est engagée à importer du Brésil un contingent tarifaire de 10 124 tonnes de sucre brut de canne à raffiner, à un droit de 98 EUR par tonne.

3. Without prejudice to paragraph 5, the quantities of raw cane sugar and raw beet sugar harvested in the Community available to the refining industry, with or without distinction of origin, shall be determined on the basis of an exhaustive Community forecast supply balance for raw sugar for each marketing year or part of a marketing year.

In the case of combined transport for hire or reward, a transport document which fulfils at least the requirements laid down in Article 6 of Council Regulation No 11 of 27 June 1960 concerning the abolition of discrimination in transport rates and conditions, in implementation of Article 79 (3) of the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community (6), shall also specify the rail loading and unloading stations relating to the rail leg, or the inland waterway loading and unloading ports relating to the inland waterway leg, or the maritime loading and unloading ports relating to the maritime section of the journey.
