The taxation of spirits - a long standing issue in Colombia and following the initiation of Dispute Settlement case by the EU (DS502) - has registered major progress with the adoption of a reform law on spirits.

Colombia produces mainly rums and aguardientes, which account for 83% of spirits consumption in Colombia in 2013 figures (10.8 million 9LC[1], in comparison with 2.3 million cases of imported spirits).

Consumption of branded western–style spirit drinks in India in 2004 was estimated by the International Wine Spirits Record (IWSR) at 87 million nine litre cases, making it one of the largest spirits markets in the world. this estimate includes some 550 000 cases of imported spirits, the remainder (99,4 %) comprising domestically produced ‘Indian Made Foreign Liquor’ (IMFL).

In Article 52(1) the fourth subparagraph is replaced by:"However, in the case of wine obtained from grapes of varieties classified as both wine-grape varieties and varieties for the production of spirits distilled from wine with a designation of origin, the total quantity normally produced in the region during that reference period shall be reduced by the quantities that were the subject of distillation other than to produce spirits distilled from wine with a designation of origin in that period.

1. The derogations referred to in Article 1 (4) (i) (1) (b) of Regulation (EEC) No 1576/89 shall relate to the maximum methyl alcohol content of fruit spirits, which shall be raised to 1 500 g per hectolitre of alcohol at 100 % vol., in the case of spirits obtained by individual fruit producers in distilleries with a total annual production of the spirit in question not exceeding 500 hectolitres of alcohol at 100 % vol., obtained from the following fruits:
1.
