Urges the Council to take decisions regarding a common European security and defence policy and on the further integration of the mechanisms of the WEU into the structures of the European Union as part of a comprehensive strategy of further development of the CFSP, including an enhanced EU capacity for conflict-prevention and crisis-management;

I understand that, at last week’s Western European Union (WEU) Assembly in Luxembourg, a decision was taken by the 16 WEU Foreign and Defence Ministers to give the EU direct access to a number of the security organisation’s assets, including its military staff.

As EU enlargement proceeds, more countries will become members of the WEU, which is both the EU's defence component and the European pillar of the Atlantic Alliance.
